A visual exploration into Synaesthesia

A visual exploration into synaesthesia. As synaesthesia is a condition where people perceive things differently, I explored how humans can see things from a new perspective, using visual illusions, spot gloss, decoder messages and typographic tricks in a concertina book. Alongside this, I interviewed synaesthetes and included these transcripts as part of the content.
Synaesthesia is a neurological condition in which someone experiences things through their senses in an unusual way, for example, they might experience a colour as a sound or a word as a taste. There are as many as 19 types of synaesthesia, but More Than Meets The Eye focuses on visual versions of the condition in relation to numbers, letters & words (grapheme-colour, ordinal-linguistic & number form synaesthesia) – this accounts for 69% of synaesthesia cases. The aim is to bring awareness to the condition, highlighting that it is a positive neurological difference and one that should be celebrated. The concertina book is stored in a spot varnished box with red acetate to be used for uncovering parts of the text.
