Replica - A Short Film

Insight into a figurine painter's frenzied mind.

Replica is a micro-short that explores a moment in the life of a character with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In it, a figurine painter, struggles to finish her work amidst incessant, external distractions. It is meant to be an exploration into a frenetic mindscape, and visual representation of time; how a minute can be stretched or retracted, through this lens of subjectivity.

The project was partially inspired by a fascination with silent films and wordless picture books, as well as research on various psychological disorders. Using composition, editing, and sound design, the aim was to put you into the shoes of the character, and evoke an emotional response, to make you experience first hand, the mounting pressure she feels when her controlled, insular world gets disrupted.

The project didn't have many parameters (we were pretty much left to choose our subject matter), but it was rife with constraints. We didn't have a budget, and had to rely on our own resources for props and set dressing. We also only had 5 hours in the space to set up and get all the shots we needed.

We did the best we could given the limitations and I am extremely pleased with the result.

After writing the script, my next step is often to create a storyboard or lookbook, with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign being my go to programs.

All of the post-producition magic was created solely on Adobe Premiere; everything from using the built in speed grades, color correction tools, to minor visual fixes, and, most notably, all of the sound design.
